Cry-Baby is a musical comedy and parody of musicals such as "Grease" and the Elvis films by John Waters, in which Johnny embodies the role of the rebellious Drape leader Wade Walker (aka Cry Baby). As such, he targets the conservative squares, who come from well-bred families. On the last day of school, Wade falls in love with the square leader's girlfriend Allison (played by Amy Locane). But the social class differences and the turmoil in the city don't make it easy for them and so a quarrel begins between the cliques. The film is set in Baltimore in the 1950s.
Director John Waters himself grew up in this city and was fascinated by the drapes in his youth, which, together with a whiny boy from his former neighbourhood, led to the inspiration for Cry-Baby.
When Waters hired Johnny for the role of Wade Walker, he initially reacted reluctantly. He was worried it would reinforce his teenage imagine. He also saw himself as a bad dancer: "I mean, I just don't dance. I don't understand it."
Waters responded by saying that mocking his imagine is the best antidote and that he shouldn't worry about dancing.
Iggy Pop, Willem Dafoe, Polly Bergen, Ricki Lake and Kim McGuire, among others, can also be seen in the cult film. It's important to mention that the performers do not sing themselves, but only lip-sync. The songs were sung by artists such as Rachel Sweet, James Intvelt, "The Jive Bombers" and "Baldwin and the Whiffles".

The song became a huge success not least because of the music video and at the same time a comeback for the Heartbreakers. It served as a career launch for Johnny Depp, Gabrielle Anwar, Faye Dunaway and Chynna Phillips, among others. The video is about a young man, Eddie Rebel (Johnny Depp), who goes to Los Angeles to become a rock star in Hollywood. There he also meets his girlfriend (Gabrielle Anwar), who shares the same tattoo with him. When he excludes his manager (Faye Dunaway) from the red carpet, it has fatal consequences: Newspapers report that his girlfriend is pregnant. His career starts to crumble when he shows up drunk at events, misbehaves while shooting a music video and his girlfriend leaves him.
The video ends with him returning to the tattoo parlor where a newcomer (Matt LeBlanc) is getting the same tattoo. Petty ends with, "They lived happily ever after." The video was shot during the filming of the movie "Arizona Dream," which starred both Depp and Dunaway. The film had to be interrupted due to a nervous breakdown suffered by director Emir Kusturica.
In 1993, Johnny Depp and Chuck E. Weiss for an alleged $350,000 to buy the Central Nightclub at 8852 Sunset Blvd. They transformed the building that once belonged to gangster Bugsy Siegel into the Viper Room. Johnny, who was dating Kate Moss at the time, created a place here where the couple felt comfortable. He took the opportunity to perform himself, to pursue his real passion of music.
The club became a popular meeting place for musicians and Hollywood stars.
The Viper Room became one of the most famous concert venues in the world. Oasis, Iggy Pop, Johnny Cash, Placebo, Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Pussycat Dolls performed at the Viper Room. In 2004, Johnny dropped out.
Shane MacGowan and the Popes:
That Woman's Got Me Drinking
Director, Actor and (later) Guitarist - Johnny Depp
Johnny and Shane MacGowan have been friends for over 30 years. Johnny admires the former Pogues frontman because in his eyes he was always perfect in everything he did.
Over the years, he had nothing but good words to say about his friend and remembered their first meeting: When he met Shane, it was a very big moment for him. He told himself afterwards that he had now met one of his great heroes, even though he didn't really get to talk to Shane, as he was - as was often the case in his younger years - heavily intoxicated.
Johnny also has a deep friendship with Shane's wife, Victoria, and has nothing but positive things to say about her. He describes her as the perfect partner and best friend for Shane, who goes through all the highs and lows with him. It should therefore come as no surprise to anyone that Johnny was also invited to the couple's wedding after 32 years of partnership) on 26.11.2018 in Copenhagen.

The rock band P was formed in 1993 by Gibby Haynes, Johnny Depp, Sal Jenco and Bill Carter. Among other things, they performed at the Austin Music Awards in 1993. Also, of course, there were some performances at the Viper Room. On November 21, 1995, the band released an album that was reissued on May 8, 2007 under Caroline Records.
A particularly incisive event occurred on October 30, 1993, when P performed with Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, among others. While the band was playing their song "Michael Stipe," their mutual friend River Phoenix, who actually wanted to join them on stage himself later, suffered seizures outside the Viper Room due to an overdose of heroin and cocaine. Phoenix died early the next morning. To this day, his death continues to influence his friends from the Viper Room at the time.
While living in New York in 1994/95, Johnny and Kate spent time with Kate's friend Lucie de la Falaise and Lucie's husband Marlon Richards. Kate: "Me and Lucie are like sisters and me and Marlon are like brother and sister." Marlon is the son of Keith Richards. Allegedly, Keith initially mistook Johnny for his son's drug dealers.
For once, this article is not about Johnny's music. But the soundtrack to the movie Dead Man is so special that we can't avoid talking about it.
Just as director Jim Jarmusch relies on haunting and at the same time very reduced staging, the soundtrack is also reduced to the essentials. Neil Young is said to have recorded the music not in a studio, but in a movie theater. He was guided directly by the finished movie. He did not compose complete songs, but transformed moods into sounds.
The soundtrack also features Johnny Depp quoting poems by William Blake. Why not take the time to let this altogether sophisticated work have an effect on you?

In 1997 Johnny met a great musician again through Kate Moss. The first time he saw Oasis was at a concert in Dublin. Kate was friends with the wife of Noel Gallagher and so the four met on a Caribbean island. Gallagher mentioned he was working on a song called "Fade in-out" which featured slide guitar. However, he himself didn't know how to play slide. So Johnny took over the slide solo. The two recorded it straight through with one of those little portable recorders. "So the slide guitar solo from the first part of the song was actually from the tape. Then the part where the drums come in was recorded in the studio," Noel Gallagher said.
Later, Oasis and Johnny recorded the version "Fade away" for the "War Child: Help compilation". Here Johnny played acoustic guitar. So it remains questionable what's true about the rumor that Johnny stepped in because Gallagher was too drunk.
