Johnny Depp und seine damalige Freundin Vanessa Paradise sind schon lange kein Paar mehr. Dennoch ist die Geschichte ihres Kennenlernens so filmreif, dass man sie fast nicht glauben mag. Angeblich war es Liebe auf den ersten Blick. Nach Angaben der französischen Sängerin und des Schauspielers trafen sie sich 1998 das erste Mal in Paris, der Stadt der Liebe, zu einer Veranstaltung. Sie stand nur einige Meter entfernt von ihm. Das einzige was er sah, war ihr Rücken. Der faszinierte den heute 60-Jährigen so sehr, dass er sich sofort in die Sängerin verliebte, als diese sich umdrehte. Doch eigentlich soll das Treffen der Beiden ganz anders abgelaufen sein, wie Vanessa in ihrer Biografie veröffentlichte. Demnach haben sich die beiden schon 1994 im Viper Room, einem Nachtclub in West Hollywood, der bis 2004 zu Teilen Johnny Depp gehörte, kennengelernt.
Die Sängerin soll ganze vier Jahre auf den Filmstar gewartet und um ihn gekämpft haben. Erfolgreich. Welche Geschichte nun wirklich stimmt, wissen nur die beiden.
Klar ist jedoch, dass die Zwei schon immer eine Leidenschaft für das Song-Schreiben haben. Als Vanessa ihr Album „Love Songs“ produzierte, sei das für sie wie eine Liebestherapie gewesen. Einer der Songs stammt sogar aus Johnny Depps Feder. Er schrieb den Refrain zu „New Year“.

Ihre damals noch sehr junge Tochter sang plötzlich eine Melodie zu dem Lied. Vanessa sei so gerührt gewesen, dass sie den Auftritt der kleinen Lily-Rose aufnahm. Das Video sei für die Eltern eine schöne Erinnerung an frühere Zeiten.

Im Februar 2011 nahmen Vanessa Paradis und Johnny Depp in Los Angeles den song "Ballade de Melodie Nelson" auf. Dabei handelt es sich um ein Cover von Serge Gainsbourg. Dieses Cover erschien auf dem Album "From Gainsbourg to Lulu", welches eine Tribute von Lucien Gainsbourg an seinen verstorbenen Vater.
