"I've always sung and always played bass, Owl came about through me having my own style and my own vision of how the bass needs to be played," Chris said in 2009
Chris Wyse and drummer Dan Dinsmore had their first band together as teenagers and they stuck to their joint project over the years, even when Wyse's star as a bassist rose after he moved to Los Angeles.
In an early version of The Owl, Chris Wyse performed the song "Behind the Sun" on the 2001 tribute album "Flammable: A Tribute To the Red Hot Chili Peppers". All Music Guide wrote "Behind the Sun" is appropriately trippy, and even replicates Flea's dominating bassline with aplomb."
A year later, guitarist Eric Bradley joined and in 2007 the band Owl, which still exists today, was formed.
Owl's first album was released in 2009, with "The Pusher" probably being the best-known song. 4 years later "The Right Thing" followed in 2013. From cool rock covers that you definitely haven't heard this way before, to a pretty personal nod to Chris' Irish roots, to my favorite Track "Mouse", the album is classic rock and yet different.
The third album "Things You Can't See" was released in 2015 with songs such as "Lake Ego" (created from a misunderstanding of the autocorrect) and "Alive", this album shines with creative bass playing and is probably the most personal album to date. Close to the experimental and with lyrics that reveal new things even on the 5th listen.
Chris tells The Guitarworld in 2015:
"This acoustic version is a reworking of a the track ‘Alive’ that appeared on Owl's self-titled debut. We recorded it a few years back at my old home up on Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles. If you’re familiar music lore, you know that Laurel Canyon has so much rock and roll history.
I felt like I just was given this song, almost like it wrote itself. It’s a timeless track, especially in its acoustic form with the slightly layered bows and vocal harmonies."
On friday, October 13, 2023, the Black Sabbath cover will be released in which Chris not only proves how well he plays bass, but also sings again. The song "Embryo (Children of the Grave)" from his solo album is now on all digital platforms.
