Tierschutz und Umweltschutz
Joe und Billie Perry sind bekannte Tierliebhaber und haben dazu beigetragen, den Bau eines neuen Tierheims in ihrer Gemeinde zu finanzieren. Vor dreiundzwanzig Jahren waren Joe und Billie die ersten in der Gegend von New England, die ein Paar der einst gefährdeten Rasse besaßen. In dieser Zeit ist das Friesische Pferd von der gefährdeten Liste auf die Liste der seltenen Rassen übergegangen. Inzwischen gibt es allein in Amerika zehntausende Pferde. Darüber hinaus unterstützen die Perrys auch die Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, deren Mitglieder Kampagnen zum Schutz von Meeresarten und Umwelt durchführen.

Joe and Billie Perry are well-known animal lovers and have helped fund the construction of a new animal shelter in their community. Twenty-three years ago, Joe and Billie were the first in the New England area to own a pair of the once endangered breed.In that time, the Friesian horse has gone from the endangered list to the rare breed list. There are now tens of thousands of horses in America alone. Perry hatte auch einen Cameo-Auftritt in Wayne's World 2 und dem 2005 MGM/UA-Film Be Cool, einer Fortsetzung von Get Shorty, der auch eine Aerosmith-Performance des Smash "Cryin'" der Gruppe enthält. Im Jahr 2005 bat ihn der Modedesigner John Varvatos, ein Fan von Joe, mit seinem Sohn Tony an einer seiner großen Modekampagnen teil zu nehmen. Lassen wir die Geschichte Joe Perry selbst erzählen. In der Talkshow Conan erzählte er folgende Geschichte:
"Es war 1980, ich hatte gerade Aerosmith verlassen. Es war Weihnachtszeit und ich brauchte etwas Geld. Das war die beste Gitarre zum Verkaufen. Ich konnte sie ziemlich schnell loswerden, weil sie sehr selten sind. Wie auch immer, ich verkaufte sie und dachte mir nicht wirklich viel dabei. Die Zeit verging... die Band kam wieder zusammen und wir begannen, wieder etwas Erfolg zu haben, und ich dachte, es wäre vielleicht eine gute Idee - vielleicht könnte ich einige dieser alten Gitarren finden, die sich in Luft aufgelöst hatten. Also habe ich angefangen, nach dieser hier zu suchen", erklärt Perry. "Brad Whitford sagte: 'Ich weiß, wo deine Gitarre ist', und er schlug eine Gitarrenzeitschrift auf und auf der Titelseite war Slashs Gitarrensammlung abgebildet, und genau in der Mitte war diese Gitarre."
Alle Versuche die Gitarre zurückzukaufen wehrte Slash jedoch mit den Worten ab "Oh Mann, bitte frag mich das nicht". Als Joe die Les Paul aufgegeben hatte, überraschte Slash während eines Auftritts ihn zu seinem 50. Geburtstag, indem er ihm die Gitarre zurück schenkte.

Let's let Joe Perry tell the story himself. On the talk show Conan, he told the following story:
“It was 1980, I just left Aerosmith. It was Christmas time and I needed some bread. That was the best guitar to sell. I could get rid of it pretty quick because they are very rare. Anyway, I sold it and really didn’t think much of it. Time went on…the band got back together again and we started to have some success again, and I thought maybe it would be a good idea — maybe I could find some of those old guitars that had gone the way of the wind. So, I started looking for this one. And I had all my guitar techs looking everywhere, and Brad Whitford said, ‘I know where your guitar is’ and he opens a guitar magazine and the centerfold has Slash’s guitar collection and right in the middle was that guitar.”
However, Slash rebuffed all attempts to buy the guitar back with the words "Oh man, please don't ask me that". When Joe had given up the Les Paul, Slash surprised him during a gig for his 50th birthday by giving him the guitar back. (Susanne - Nov 2023)
